Stop the Whining!

Today is a bit of a rant: why do so many people in the world whine about their circumstances? I swear, I hear more people b**ch about things that applaud things.

Unfortunately, I think for most people it’s easier to focus on the bad. We’ve created a society where we become close with others by sharing our “pain.” And we love to wallow in it.

Well, I say STOP THE WHINING!

Why? First, it’s irritating. Second, and perhaps more importantly, by focusing on what we don’t want, don’t like, and have to fight against, we’re setting ourselves up for a life of pain, frustration, and anger.

And it bleeds over into everything.

Feeling stuck about the war in Iraq? Hate the current administration? Mad at the guy in front of you for cutting you off on the freeway? I guarantee that you’ll have a bad day, and feel stuck, miserable and helpless in all that you do.

But if you can stay in the positive, know that today is a good day just because you’re alive, feel grateful that you have a roof over your head, a warm meal on the table, a steady job, and air to breathe, I guarantee that you’ll have a great day.

The more time you can spend in a state of gratitude, the more positive will come into your life.

There’s a story about Mother Theresa: she was asked to march in an anti-war rally over the Vietnam war. She said no. The organizers who asked her were taken aback, and said “but you’re such a wonderful person, and we know that you don’t like war, so why won’t you march with us?” And she replied (I’m paraphrasing here), “I don’t march against anything. But call me when you have a rally for peace. I’ll be there.”

Some of you may read that and get it right away. If you don’t, don’t feel bad. What she was saying is that she wasn’t going to waste her energy figting against anything, because she knew that would only beget more of what she was against, and beget more fighting. She would rather spend her energy and time working for something–in this case, for peace.

So, I challenge you: see if you can go an entire day without complaining about anything. This may be hard, but I guarantee it’s worth it. If you’re with people who are complaining, either walk away or gently change the subject. But don’t get pulled down to that level.
